Hail damage repair
Hail leaves shallow dents across every flat panel that faced the storm. Paintless repair takes them out from underneath, so the car keeps its factory paint and its value.
What a hail repair involves
It starts with an inspection under line lighting, panel by panel. Insurers price hail by the number and size of dents on each panel, so an accurate count matters. Dents missed at inspection are dents you pay for later or live with.
Roof repairs usually mean lowering the headliner to reach the underside. Hoods and trunks have bracing that has to be worked around. Aluminum panels take longer than steel. None of this is unusual; it's just why hail repair is priced per panel and not per car.
How long it takes
Light hail on a few panels can be a one or two day job. A car that sat out in a heavy storm can take several days. You'll get a timeline at inspection, before any work starts. If your policy includes rental reimbursement, ask your insurer to set that up when you file.
When hail damage needs more than PDR
If a hailstone cracked the paint, that spot needs refinishing. If a panel has more damage than it's worth repairing, it gets replaced. Glass, mirrors and lights are separate from dent repair. We'll flag all of it at inspection so it goes on the claim the first time.
After the storm
Take photos in daylight, write down the date, and file a claim with your insurer. You choose the shop. Pick one that's local and will still be here next month if something needs a second look.
Good fit
- Hail dents from pea-size up through golf-ball-size hail
- Roofs, hoods, trunks, fenders and doors
- Dents with the paint still intact
Not a fit
- Impacts that cracked or chipped the paint
- Panels so damaged replacement costs less
- Glass, mirror and light damage
Common questions
Does insurance cover hail damage?
If you carry comprehensive coverage, hail is usually covered after your deductible. Liability-only policies don't cover it. Your policy is what decides, so check it or call your agent.
Can my insurance company make me use their shop?
Not on a Texas auto policy. Texas Insurance Code § 1952.301 bars insurers from limiting your choice of repair facility. They can recommend a shop; you choose.
How long does it take?
A single door ding usually takes an hour or two. Several dents can take most of a day. Hail damage ranges from a day to several days, depending on how many panels were hit and whether trim or the headliner has to come out. You'll get a timeline before we start.
Will a hail claim raise my rates?
Hail is a comprehensive claim, not an at-fault accident, but how an insurer treats it at renewal depends on the company and your claim history. Your agent can tell you before you file.
